Dharmendra Pradhan, the Union Education Minister, said in an interview with the media organisation PTI in October 2023 that students will not be required to appear for the twice-yearly board exams for class 10th and 12th, and that the option is being introduced to lessen stress brought on by the fear of missing out on an opportunity. Mr. Pradhan stated in an interview with PTI that a serious conversation about "dummy schools" is long overdue and that the problem cannot be ignored. It is not required for students to appear for the twice-yearly board exams for classes 10 and 12.

The 2025 board exams are expected to be held in two sessions: November–December 2024 for the first session, and February–March 2025 for the second. Whichever of the students' two scores is better will determine the final results and merit list.

Board exams will be held twice a year in accordance with the New Curriculum Framework (NCF), which was unveiled by the Ministry of Education in August. This will give students a lot of time and opportunity to perform well and retain the highest score.
